The Eugene C. Pulliam Fellowship is intended to enable a mid-career journalist who specializes in fact-based commentary or analysis to have time away from daily responsibilities to pursue in-depth reporting projects.Scholarship Details• Provides up to $100,000 in funding• Supports study, research, and travel related to public interest journalism• Results in published work such as editorials, books, or podcasts• More than one fellow may be selected per year, with funding divided at judges’ discretion• Administered by the Society of Professional Journalists FoundationEligibility Criteria• Must be a U.S.-based journalist specializing in opinion writing, analysis, or investigative reporting• Freelancers must spend the majority of their time or earn most income from journalism• Minimum of three years of professional experience• Must show strong writing, analytical skills, and commitment to solutions-based journalism• Must secure time release from daily work duties without risking employment, if applicable• Must intend to publish work within 6 to 12 months of selection• All entries and submissions must be in EnglishApplication Process1. Write a cover letter outlining the proposed project, timeline, and use of funds2. Obtain endorsement from an editor or supervisor, or self-endorse if freelance3. Prepare a one-page professional biography and summary of experience4. Submit five samples of opinion or analytical writing5. Complete the application process through the Society of Professional Journalists FoundationFellows may use the funds to enrich their knowledge of a public interest issue through courses, independent study or travel. The fellowship is intended to result in published projects such as editorials, investigative series, podcasts or books.
