John Hebner Scholarship

The John Hebner Scholarship, offered by the American Council of the Blind (ACB) in partnership with the American Foundation for the Blind (AFB), is awarded to students who must be working full time and enrolled in substantial courses. The ACB Scholarship Program was established in 1982 and offers educational scholarships ranging from $2,000 to $7,500 for entering freshmen, undergraduate and graduate students, and those attending technical college. To be eligible, applicants need to be legally blind (defined as vision no better than 20/200 in the best eye with correction, or visual field of 20 degrees or less), maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA (unless extenuating circumstances exist), be a full-time student (or a part-time student who works at least 32 hours per week), and be involved in their school and local community. Applicants must attend post-secondary institutions in the United States. Required application materials include: certification of legal blindness from an ophthalmologist, optometrist or physician; a transcript from the school currently attending (entering freshmen submit high school transcripts; graduate students submit undergraduate transcripts); two letters of recommendation from a current or recent instructor, career counselor or employer; and proof of acceptance from a post-secondary school.
