DeadlineDescription
The W.H. Metz Newspaper Management Scholarship offers financial assistance to college students in Alabama. Rising college seniors seeking a bachelor's degree in journalism or advertising are encouraged to apply. Special consideration is given to minority students who plan to pursue a career in newspaper management. The application deadline is Friday, April 3, 2026. The W.H. Metz Newspaper Management Scholarship awards $5,000 each year to a student planning a career in journalism. Applicants are encouraged to seek the nomination from a faculty member, but all applicants will be considered. The nomination letter should discuss applicant's experience and management potential in news and other media operations of a newspaper. The application also must include the student's resume, college transcript, and the nominee's one-page explanation of interest in newspaper management. Eligibility: The scholarship is open to rising juniors and seniors enrolled in a university or college in Alabama. Students must have either declared a major in journalism or worked at an APA member newspaper or on a high school or college newspaper staff. The scholarship is offered without regard to race, sex, religion, or national origin. Minority students are encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to applicants who say they plan to work at a newspaper in Alabama. Applications will be reviewed by the APA Journalism Foundation Board of Directors, and a winner, if selected, will be notified in May. A check for the scholarship will be sent directly to the student in September 2026, after the scholarship recipient sends verification of enrollment in the fall semester or winter quarter to the APA office.
